The New York Times recently reported that 15 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine were scrapped due to production errors in the vaccine factory. The delivery of Johnson & Johnson's new crown vaccine in the United States was also forced to suspend.
A few weeks ago, workers in a factory in Baltimore accidentally conflated vaccine ingredients. Federal officials said the accident was a human error. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered during the investigation that this production error has affected the future shipment of Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the United States. Johnson & Johnson said it has taken emergency measures to avoid further degradation of vaccine quality.
It is understood that these vaccines are in the trial production stage. At this stage, the vaccines distributed throughout the United States and the vaccines to be distributed next week are all produced in the Netherlands. However, according to the original plan, this factory will produce 24 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine by the end of April and distribute them to all parts of the United States. Today, this batch of vaccines may not be delivered on time. At present, the US Food and Drug Administration has launched an investigation into this incident, and the progress of the vaccine production line of this factory being approved by relevant agencies will also be affected.
"The New York Times" stated that this production accident was a great embarrassment for Johnson & Johnson, because Johnson & Johnson's vaccines are considered to promote the United States' national immunization program. According to the report, the doses of Johnson & Johnson currently delivered and used nationwide will not be affected because those vaccines are produced in the Netherlands.
However, shipments of tens of millions of doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccines originally scheduled to be delivered next month are expected to be affected because the production of this part of the vaccine is carried out at the Baltimore plant.
This is not the first time that a vaccine has been destroyed in the United States. Prior to this, a vaccine was destroyed in a hospital in Boston, the United States. Nearly 2,000 doses of Modena's new crown vaccine were scrapped. The source of this accident turned out to be a cleaner. At that time, the hospital staff discovered that a refrigerator storing vaccines was not powered on, and all the 1,900 doses of vaccines stored in it were destroyed. According to CDC requirements, the Modena vaccine must be stored in a facility at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. According to a hospital spokesperson, the refrigerator was placed in a safe place and an alarm system was installed, but the cleaner accidentally touched the plug during cleaning.
In addition, there was also an incident of deliberately sabotaging a vaccine. Last year, in a medical institution in Wisconsin, a pharmacist found 57 bottles of vaccines outside the refrigerator. These vaccines could vaccinate 570 people. Since the vaccines can survive for 12 hours after being taken out of the refrigerator, the doctor believed that these vaccines could still be used and vaccinated 57 people. However, after careful cross-examination of the pharmacist, the employee admitted that he did it deliberately, and that the vaccines had already exceeded the 12-hour shelf life.
