Nevirapine is used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV-1 infection. Single use of this drug will quickly produce resistant viruses. Therefore, nevirapine should be used together with at least two other antiretroviral drugs. For pregnant women who did not use antiretroviral therapy during delivery, nevirapine (may not be combined with other antiretroviral drugs) can prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1. Pregnant women only need a single oral dose of nevirapine during delivery, and newborns also only need a single oral dose of nevirapine after birth (see Dosage and Usage; Appendix 2, Clinical Research Review). If feasible, it is recommended that mothers take nevirapine together with other antiretroviral drugs before delivery to reduce the chance of mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1.
