Meloxicam is the first cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor to be marketed and is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug developed by the German company BOEDIRINGER INGELHEIM. The mechanism of action of meloxicam is to prevent the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins (PGs) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX). Compared with traditional NSAIDs such as naproxen, ibuprofen, and piroxicam, meloxicam has similar anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and has significantly improved gastrointestinal tolerance. The COX-2/COX-1 value of meloxicam is much lower than other clinically commonly used NSAIDs, so the clinical application of meloxicam is more extensive. In September 2020, the European Union approved a new non-opioid dual-acting analgesic Zynrelef (bupivacaine/meloxicam) specifically for the treatment of postoperative pain and inflammation in a single dose at the surgical site. In 2017, the market size of terminal non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic drugs in public medical institutions in China has risen to 13.2 billion yuan, a growth rate of 15.55%. In 2019, the sales of meloxicam tablets in public hospitals exceeded RMB 200 million.
