Levocetirizine is an anti-allergic drug jointly developed by Sepracor of the United States and UCB of Belgium. It was launched in Europe in 2001 and has been approved for sale in more than 80 countries or regions in the world. Levocetirizine's anti-allergic effect is not only due to its strong antagonistic effect on H1 receptors, but also other anti-allergic mechanisms. The pharmacological mechanisms related to asthma include the inhibition of eosinophil-based inflammation in the airway Cell aggregation and infiltration, suppression of hypertrophy/basophil degranulation, suppression of late-onset asthma response, and enhancement of the bronchodilator effect of β2‑adrenergic receptor agonists. Levocetirizine hydrochloride is an improved replacement product for the cardiac side effects of cetirizine. The affinity for H receptor is twice that of cetirizine, and the dose is half that of cetirizine. The central nervous system side effects such as sedation and lethargy of cetirizine are avoided. Compared with cetirizine and other antihistamines, levocetirizine hydrochloride has the advantages of strong antihistamine activity, no sedative side effects, good safety, and good clinical effects. Studies have compared the effects of levocetirizine and montelukastna in improving AR symptoms caused by ragweed pollen allergy. Levocetirizine is more effective in improving seasonal AR symptoms.
