Famotidine is a histamine H2 receptor antagonist. It is another H2 receptor antagonist after cimetidine and ranitidine. It was developed by Yamanouchi, Japan, and was launched in Japan in 1985. Obtained US FDA approval for listing. Famotidine has the characteristics of a high affinity for H2 receptors, has a significant inhibitory effect on gastric acid content, and has an inhibitory effect on the increase of gastric acid and pepsin caused by various stimuli. Famotidine's inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion is more than 30 times stronger than cimetidine and 6-10 times stronger than ranitidine.
