Gadoteridol injection is a patented MRI contrast agent developed by BRACCO S.P.A. in Italy. It is a gadolinium-based non-ionic contrast agent for MRI examinations of the brain, spinal cord, and liver. The product was first launched in the UK in October 1992 and has been approved and launched in 22 countries including Japan, the United States, and the European Union. The uncomplexed gadolinium ion is toxic, but after forming a complex with a non-toxic organic chelating agent, the toxic effect of gadolinium can be almost completely eliminated without significant influence on its paramagnetic effect. Various chelating agents for gadolinium that can be injected intravenously have become an integral part of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology.
