Beraprost sodium is a stable orally active prostacyclin (PG) I2 analogue with similar pharmacodynamic properties to prostacyclin. Beraprost sodium binds to the prostacyclin membrane receptor coupled with adenine nucleotide cyclase to induce the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (c AMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (c GMP). The effect of beraprost sodium on c AMP and c GMP inhibits the release of Ca2+ from intracellular storage points, which leads to a decrease in the influx of Ca2+ across the membrane. This reduction is believed to cause smooth muscle cell relaxation and induce vasodilation. In human studies, beraprost sodium seems to inhibit platelet aggregation caused by adenosine diphosphate, collagen and epinephrine. It has antiplatelet and vasodilator effects, and is widely used in the treatment of various vascular diseases.
