Belsomra (Suvorexant) is a novel sedative-hypnotic drug that is prescribed to promote sleep in patients with insomnia.

 

The drug was developed by Merck of the United States and was first approved for marketing in the United States in August 2014, and was approved for marketing in Japan in the same year. Suvorexant is a representative drug of non-central nervous system hypnotic drugs. It is a selective orexin receptor antagonist. It is the world's first insomnia treatment drug that uses orexin receptors as the site of action. It is used for the treatment of falling asleep and sleeping difficulties (Insomnia) patients. Since the site of action of this variety is not the central nervous system, it has the advantage of being safer and more effective than traditional hypnotics. Clinical studies have shown that suvorexant is effective in the treatment of insomnia patients resistant to antidepressant sedatives and benzodiazepine sedatives.
