Demethylvenlafaxine is the main active metabolite of venlafaxine. Venlafaxine is the first selective dual reuptake inhibitor on the market. It exerts an antidepressant effect by significantly inhibiting the reuptake of 5-HT and NA. The drug has a rapid onset of action and is effective after 1 week of administration. It also has anti-anxiety effects. Like venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine has reuptake inhibitory activity on both 5-HT and NA, but has little effect on H1, muscarinic cholinergic receptors and α-adrenergic receptors. Compared with antidepressants with a single mechanism of action, it can improve symptoms better. As a third-generation SNRI antidepressant, its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics are significantly different from those of venlafaxine and duloxetine.
