Omeprazole was developed by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. It was first marketed in Sweden in 1988. It was the first proton pump inhibitor to be marketed. In the early 1990s, based on omeprazole, AstraZeneca adopted microorganisms and enzymes. The method synthesized a single L-body (S) omeprazole, that is, esomeprazole, and later changed its name to esomeprazole. Esomeprazole is 60% stronger in inhibiting acid than omeprazole, and it is the strongest in proton pump inhibitors. Because it does not have to undergo metabolic conversion to directly exert its acid suppression effect, it has a faster onset and a longer duration than omeprazole, and it is also the longest acid suppression duration among proton pump inhibitors.
