Eslicarbazepine acetate was launched in Europe in 2009 under the trade name Zebinix, and was approved for marketing by the FDA in 2013. Eslicarbazepine is a prodrug of S-licarbazepine acetate developed by Sunovion Pharma. It is a "third-generation" anti-epileptic drug. S-licarbazepine is the main active metabolite of oxcarbazepine, which can block voltage dependence. Oxcarbazepine and carbamazepine are the main first-line drugs for partial seizure epilepsy. Compared with oxcarbazepine, eslicarbazepine acetate is better tolerated and has clinical prospects and competition.
