Oxybutynin hydrochloride was first marketed in the United States in 1975. It has a direct antispasmodic effect on smooth muscle and can inhibit the muscarinic effect of acetylcholine on smooth muscle. Oxybutynin hydrochloride can selectively act on the detrusor muscle of the bladder, reduce intravesical pressure, increase bladder capacity, reduce involuntary bladder contraction, and relieve urgency, frequency and incontinence. The anticholinergic activity of oxybutynin hydrochloride on detrusor muscle is only 1/5 that of atropine, but its antispasmodic effect is 4-10 times that of atropine. Oxybutynin hydrochloride has no blocking effect on skeletal muscle ganglia and autonomic ganglia. With the aging of the population, male lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary incontinence are becoming more and more common. Oxybutynin hydrochloride is a major advancement in the treatment of urinary incontinence. Oxybutynin hydrochloride is both an M3 choline receptor blocker and a calcium antagonist. It is the most commonly used M choline receptor blocker in clinical practice. It was evaluated by the 3rd International Advisory Committee for Urinary Incontinence (ICI) Recommended drugs in the A-level. In 2017, the global urinary incontinence drug treatment market reached US$3.4 billion, and the total global sales of oxybutynin hydrochloride in 2018 were 40.72 million yuan.
