5-azacitidine was developed by Pharmion and was first marketed in the United States on July 1, 2004. It is used for the treatment of all subtypes of myelodysplastic syndromes. Azacitidine has been approved by the FDA for marketing. The first treatment drug for myelodysplastic syndromes (myelodysplastic syndromes, MDS) is also the only drug that can significantly prolong high-risk MDS patients so far. Its indications are all five subtypes of MDS. Azacitidine has a good effect on tumors related to DNA hypermethylation. It works by restoring the normal growth and differentiation of bone marrow cells. Azacitidine enjoys rare disease drug status in Europe, America, and Japan.
