Latanoprost was launched in the United States in 1996. It is a new type of phenyl substituted propyl ester prostaglandin F2a, which is a selective prostaglandin F2a receptor agonist. Studies have pointed out that after treatment with latanoprost eye drops for patients with open-angle glaucoma, in addition to a significant reduction in IOP, corneal thickness and ACD also decreased in a short time. Clinical trial studies have confirmed that latanoprost has a more stable and reliable lowering of intraocular pressure than travoprost and timolol, and can effectively reduce visual field damage. After using Timolol for 2-3 months, some patients may experience a decrease in the effect of reducing intraocular pressure, which is called a "fluctuation phenomenon", while latanoprost has no reports of such fluctuations; on the other hand, Latanoprost leads to a decrease in tear film stability and tear secretion in patients after the medication, which is slightly less than travoprost and timolol. In 2019, the sales of terminal ophthalmic drugs for urban public hospitals, county-level public hospitals, urban community centers, and township health centers in China were 10.931 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 14.83%. It can be seen that the scale of the domestic ophthalmic drug market is continuously growing. Researchers predict the global sales of latanoprost in 2021 will be 250 million US dollars.
