Tavaborrol is Anacor's first boron-based topical antifungal drug, approved by the US FDA on July 7, 2014 for the topical treatment of fungal toenail infections. Tavaborrol prevents cell protein synthesis by forming adducts with cytoplasmic leucylaminoacyl transfer RNA (tRNA) synthetase, thereby exerting its antifungal activity. Compared with topical excipients containing active skin care ingredients, Tavaborrol has shown obvious advantages in clinical trials to reach the ratio of "completely cured" and "completely or nearly completely cured". Tavaborrol is well tolerated, and most adverse events are reported to be mild and not related to treatment.
