Cabazitaxel was developed by Sanofi. It was approved by the US FDA in June 2010, Europe EMA in March 2011, and Japan PMDA in July 2014. It has not yet been listed in my country. Cabazitaxel is a semi-synthetic taxane compound. Its precursor is obtained from the needles of the yew tree. Its mechanism of action is similar to that of other taxane drugs. It works by destroying the microtubule network that is essential for mitotic and interphase cell function and causes the inhibition of cell division and cell death. The drug is used in combination with prednisone to treat hormone-refractory metastatic prostate cancer that was previously treated with docetaxel. Clinical trials have proved that it can also shrink tumors, slow the growth or spread of tumors, so as to relieve the symptoms of prostate cancer and improve the quality of life of patients. Cabazitaxel has anti-tumor activity on tumors that are not sensitive to docetaxel chemotherapy. Cabazitaxel is the first chemotherapy drug that has been proven to prolong the survival of patients with CRPC after the failure of docetaxel. Cabazitaxel is therefore a second-line treatment for CRPC. Cabazitaxel provides a new option for the treatment of CRPC, which is quite an epoch-making milestone.
