Cefoxitin sodium belongs to β-lactam antibiotics. Because the 7-methoxy group in its structure is highly resistant to β-lactamase, it has outstanding antibacterial effect and is an excellent second-generation methoxy cephalosporin. Cefoxitin binds to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to inhibit cell wall biosynthesis of actively dividing bacteria, thereby acting as an antibacterial agent. The antibacterial effect of cefoxitin sodium is similar to other second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics, but because its structure contains a 7α-methoxy group, it greatly reduces the hydrolysis and destruction of β-lactamase in the bacteria. Its resistance is significantly lower than other second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics. The anti-anaerobic effect of cefoxitin sodium is also better than other second-generation cephalosporins. As a best-selling antibiotic product, cefoxitin sodium for injection has a sales scale of 7.501 billion yuan in 2015, a year-on-year increase of 5.60%. At present, due to the increasing resistance of cephalosporins to bacteria, cefoxitin sodium, which is different from the first and third generation cephalosporin antibiotics, has once again attracted people's attention.
