The phosphoric acid in the phosphate is combined to form a precipitate of iron phosphate, which is excreted in the feces, does not depend on kidney function, reduces blood phosphorus, and does not increase serum calcium and calcium phosphorus product. The solubility of iron phosphate is slightly higher than that of lanthanum phosphate. Animal experiments show that iron citrate has a better effect on reducing the average phosphorus absorption than calcium carbonate and lanthanum carbonate.
