Ritonavir is an anti-HIV-1 and HIV-2 protease inhibitor approved by the U.S. FDA in March 1996. Lopinavir/ritonavir combination preparations are one of the more commonly used clinically. Ritonavir is used as an enhancer of lopinavir to avoid the low blood concentration caused by the rapid metabolism of lopinavir and lose the therapeutic effect.
