Mesna is a protective agent for the urinary system, used to relieve the side effects of the antitumor drug (iso)cyclophosphamide on the urinary tract system. The protective mechanism is that after reacting with the toxic metabolites of the two, non-toxic products can be formed, which are quickly excreted from the body in the urine. This product can prevent urinary system epithelial toxicity such as hemorrhagic cystitis caused by high-dose ifosfamide or cyclophosphamide for tumor chemotherapy. Mesna is a special drug for chemotherapy. Because the liver and kidneys are most easily affected during chemotherapy, taking mesna can generally protect the liver and kidneys. This product is included in the "World Health Organization Standard List of Essential Medicines" catalog.
